Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine have uncovered in their recent study that individuals who engage in smoking experience a decrease in brain size after a certain period.

A smaller brain volume is linked to various mental and cognitive issues such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research also highlighted that although quitting smoking can prevent further damage, the part of the brain that has already been affected cannot regenerate. While experts were aware of the damages related to smoking on the lungs, there was limited knowledge about its effects on the brain.

The findings of the study were recently published in the Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science journal.
